I'm sure the German president intended to show the positive impact his country's Turkish community has in terms of culinary deliciousness. But it seems a bit like he's saying 'the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Turkey is kebabs – and that reminds me, get the pizza maker ready next time I go to Italy.'
Steinmeier admitted that he is partial to the occasional döner kebab “spicy or with garlic, depending on the other guests I have afterwards.” So now we know that if you have a meeting with the German president and he smells like garlic sauce, he doesn't like you very much.
