Within the boundaries of the project”Women Make News” (WoMeN) in Dushanbe at the Rumi Hotel, a three-day seminar is held with the participation of media representatives and gender specialists. Its main objective is to support independent media in their efforts to increase the participation, representation and protection of women in the news.
The project was organized with the support of the German Embassy in Tajikistan. It consists of a series of activities aimed at developing gender-sensitive journalism in the country.
“Women’s rights are an indicator of the state of society. It is essential to include women in public discussion and dialogue to ensure that their voices are heard. Promoting the role and position of women in the Tajik media will lead to a more constructive dialogue that is reflected in the news and reports,” says Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Tajikistan York Schugraf.
According to the national director of Internews in Tajikistan, Rukhshona Nazhmidinova, the problem of coverage of gender equality issues remains relevant.
“Unfortunately, these issues are often seen exclusively as women’s issues, while other larger socio-economic issues directly related to gender equality go unnoticed,” she notes.
Rukhshona Nazhmidinova believes that gender equality should be viewed from different perspectives.
“For example, from an economic point of view. According to the World Bank, only 31% of women of working age are in paid work, meaning that huge economic potential remains untapped simply because of gender inequality. Through this project, we would like to support initiatives that will help understand and show the importance of gender equality for the overall development of the country,” she explains.

The project will support the collaboration of local media and gender experts to develop methods and approaches that will help increase the representation and involvement of women in content production. It is expected to increase the participation of women as content creators, including news production, as well as experts on topical issues discussed in local media.
In addition, the Women Make News project aims to increase the share of female audiences in local media and give women, especially from vulnerable groups, the opportunity to share their views with a wider audience.
Among the activities implemented within the project are meetings of experts and media specialists, provision of sub-grants and technical assistance to journalists, provision of psychosocial support and adaptation of audience analysis tools for local media with the aim of increasing the share of women.
The WoMeN project will be implemented from July to the end of December 2024. The total budget is 150 thousand euros.
