A new diamond has been discovered in Botswana using special X-ray technology.
Mining company Lucara Diamond has announced that it has discovered a diamond weighing 2,492 carats (498.4 grams) at its Karowe mine in Botswana, Africa. announced.
The as-yet-unnamed gem will be the second ever discovered and the largest known to exist.
The largest diamond – 3106.75 carats or 621.35 grams – was the famous “Cullinan” found in South Africa in 1905. But this stone was broken into more than a hundred pieces. Its largest piece, the Great Star of Africa diamond, weighs 530.2 carats and adorns the scepter of the British King Edward VII.
The new diamond was discovered using Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray Transmission, a special X-ray technology that allows large gemstones to be identified and mined as a whole. The company installed it in 2017 to identify and store large, valuable diamonds.
