The head of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has agreed that the former head of the National Security Committee, Karim Masimov, convicted of treason and attempting to seize power, should be denied a pardon, the presidential administration said in response to a request from Informbur. .kz

The ministry recalled that Masimov’s petition for clemency was discussed on June 27 by the commission on clemency issues headed by the President of Kazakhstan.

“Based on the results of the study of the possibility of applying the act of pardon to Masimov, the commission submitted a corresponding proposal to the head of state, with which he agreed,” reads the response to the request.

It is noted that the author of the petition has already been informed of the decision.

Karim Masimov was detained during the events of January 2022. The criminal proceedings against him were classified as “top secret”. At the end of April 2023, the court in Astana sentenced Karim Masimov to 18 years in prison for high treason, attempted violent seizure of power, abuse of authority and official power. He tried to challenge the sentence, but the appeals court left the sentence unchanged.

In relation to Masimov, a preliminary investigation is also underway under Part 3, Paragraph 3 of Article 218 (“Legalization (laundering) of money and other property obtained by criminal means”) and Part 4 of Article 366 (“Accepting a bribe” on a particularly large scale”) of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan .

Karim Masimov was considered one of the most influential people in the country and the closest to former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Over the years, he served as Prime Minister, Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President. From September 2016, he served as the Chairman of the National Security Committee, which he lost on 5 January 2022 amid mass unrest. On January 8 of the same year, the KNB announced the detention of Masimov on suspicion of treason.
