The Ministry of Transport is raising money to continue the construction of the road from Rushan to the border with Murghab.
The head of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan, Azim Ibrokhim, said at a press conference today, July 24, that the construction of the border section of the Kalai Khumb – Vanj – Rushana road should be completed by the beginning of 2025.
“There was an order to complete this section by the end of this year. However, due to the need for high-quality construction of two tunnels and five tunnels, the construction of the project may take several months. The expected date of completion of the construction is the beginning of next year,” said the minister.
According to him, thanks to the tunnels, the total length of the road will be shortened by 16 km.
“One of the tunnels will be 1.8 km long, the other 3.4 km. It is important that the work is completed efficiently, so it will take more time to complete the project,” said Azim Ibrohim.
At the same time, he noted that work on the road is proceeding at an intensive pace.

We need money to travel to Khorog
The minister also talked about the construction of a road from Rushan to Khorog (more precisely, on the border of Shugnan and Murgab regions).
The project study and feasibility study of the approximately 235 km long section with financial support from the World Bank has already been fully completed.
“We are now looking for a source of funding and are working on this issue in several directions, including negotiations with Chinese partners,” said Azim Ibrohim.
But the minister emphasized that the volume of funds is significant.
“Depending on whether it is grant or loan funding, the amount can vary. Based on a cost of $1 million per kilometer, the total would be about $235 million. If the cost is $1.5 million per kilometer, the amount will be even higher. The Ministry of Transport is actively working to obtain the necessary funds and hopes for the successful completion of projects that will significantly improve the region’s transport infrastructure,” said the minister.
As previously announced, the implementation of the 92 km Kalai Khumb – Vanj – Rushan border highway construction project will contribute to the further development of the multimodal China-Tajikistan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Krocan corridor.
According to the Ministry of Transport, 33.5 million somoni have been allocated from the state budget in Tajikistan in 2024 for key construction projects in the transport sector.
This amount was planned for work at 25 workplaces. At the moment, work has already been completed on 13 objects worth 18.9 million somoni, which is 94% of what was planned for this period. The competition for contractors continues at the other 12 planned locations.
