TEHRAN – The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in northern Tehran on Wednesday prompted new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to declare revenge, a move that could escalate tensions between the Islamic Republic and Israel.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend Pezeshkian’s swearing-in on Tuesday and was killed in a Hamas “raid” on the residential building where he was staying in the early hours of Wednesday.
