kazakhstan Today — Specialists at the University Medical Center (UMC) performed organ transplants on three patients in need on July 17. The surgeries, which took place at UMC clinics, used organs from a generous donor, a 44-year-old woman who tragically suffered a hemorrhagic stroke resulting in brain death. Her family agreed to donate organs, giving new life to five individuals.
According to the UMC press office, the donor heart transplant was performed on a 43-year-old patient who had previously been supported by a mechanical LVAD circulatory device at the UMC Heart Center. Another patient was transplanted at the same time, and a kidney transplant was performed on a 15-year-old girl at the Maternity and Children’s Center. All the recipients are currently undergoing rehabilitation and are in a stable condition under the careful care of doctors.
In addition, patients at the National Research Oncology Center (NROC) in Astana were transplanted with a second kidney and liver from the same donor. This underscores a collaborative effort across healthcare facilities to facilitate life-saving procedures.
“Organ transplantation is one of the most demanding operations. However, our experience, skills and technical equipment allow us to perform them at a high level. Heart and lung transplantation is performed only from a posthumous donor with confirmation of brain death. However, the next step largely depends on the decision of the next of kin of the potential donor,” the UMC press statement reads.
UMC expressed appreciation to the donor family, transplant coordinators and medical teams from the Akmola Region Multidisciplinary Regional Hospital and UMC and NROC clinics. Special recognition was also given to Kokshetau City Patrol Police Battalion, Service Inspectors and Akmola Region Local Police Service Department for providing traffic support and a “green corridor” to save precious time which is vital. during the transfer of donor organs.
