TOKYO – Foreign energy companies are ramping up supplies of personnel and spare parts to Japan’s offshore wind industry, potentially bolstering the local supply chain, while concerns about profitability remain.
The Japanese government has completed two public tenders for large-scale offshore wind projects, selecting developers for seven offshore areas with a combined capacity of 3,500 megawatts, or 3.5 gigawatts. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry wants to introduce up to 45 GW of offshore wind power by 2040.
