An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad has granted bail to several arrested members of the Pakistan National Assembly Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Sher Afzal Marwat and others.
The court ordered their immediate release on furnishing surety bonds of Rs 30,000 each.
The hearing, presided over by Justice Abu Al-Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, reviewed the cases of the arrested PTI lawmakers.
The prosecutor claimed that Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Ahmad Chattha, who faces a minimum sentence of three years, was named in the case.
However, the court was investigating whether any evidence was obtained from Sher Afzal Marwat, Ahmad Chattha and other legislators, with the prosecutor confirming that no such return was made.
The arrested PTI members, including Sher Afzal Marwat, Sheikh Waqas, Ahmad Chattha and others, were charged with counter-terrorism in several police stations, including Sangjani, Tarnol and Noon.
Last week on September 9, Islamabad Police arrested PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan MNA Sher Afzal Marwat outside Parliament House after the National Assembly session on Monday.
According to media reports, a heavy police presence has gathered outside the parliament building in anticipation. As the PTI leaders left the building, the police took up positions and quickly moved to arrest Marwat.
Police officials announced that at least three cases were filed against PTI supporters and leaders at Sangjani and Poledne police stations after Sunday’s rally.
Police also raided Parliament last week to arrest several PTI leaders as well as Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzad Hamid Raza.
The arrests came a day after the PTI braved a legal minefield on Sunday to hold its rally in the capital, the government wasted not arresting its leaders for violating last-gasp laws hastily passed ahead of the highly anticipated event – widely seen as a test of the political muscle of the engaged party.
Cases against PTI leaders
The Islamabad police filed three cases against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership for not ending the rally on time, throwing stones at policemen and violating designated routes.
The cases were registered under the recently passed Public Order and Peace Act following a PTI public rally.
The first case was filed at the Sangjani police station for gathering beyond the permitted time limit.
The second case was registered at Sumbal police station for violating the pre-approved route by leading convoys through Sadaat Colony and Srinagar Highway.
The third case, lodged at the Noon Police Station, pertains to stone pelting on law enforcement officials, including the Safe City Superintendent of Police (SSP) and other officers.
