TOKYO — It’s been a year since China banned seafood imports from Japan in response to the release of treated wastewater from the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. China filled the gap with purchases from South America, Asia and other countries.
China’s total seafood imports from September 2023 – just after it halted shipments from Japan – through July fell about 10% year-on-year in dollar terms, according to China’s General Administration of Customs. Imports of shellfish, including scallops, fell 11%, while fresh fish fell 4%.
