For the first time in Asia, the Kayak and Canoe World Championships will be held in Samarkand, the most historic and oldest city of Uzbekistan, from 23 to 25 August.
Why was Samarkand chosen to host the championship?
Known to the world for its ancient monuments and rich historical and cultural heritage, Samarkand is now becoming a venue for major sporting events of world stature. A number of important goals were also aimed at organizing the Kayaking and Canoeing World Championships right here:
- To draw the attention of the world community to the rich history and culture of Uzbekistan;
- Strengthening international sports relations and cooperation;
- Increasing the country’s reputation on the international stage.
Pride in achievements
Uzbekistan is rightly proud of its achievements in various fields of sports. Among the famous athletes who honored the country can be recognized:
- Vadim Menkov is a world and Asian champion, a 4-time champion of the Asian Games. His achievements continue to inspire the younger generation of athletes.
- Artur Gulijev is the gold medalist from the World Championship in Duisburg, the winner of the World Cup held in Hungary in 2023.
- Vladlen Denisov is a four-time Asian Games champion.
- Arina Tanatmisheva is the winner of the Asian and world championships, as well as the champion of Uzbekistan several times.
- Nilufar Zokirova is the winner of the Asian Championship held in Shanghai in 2019.
- Ekaterina Shubina is the owner of 2 silver and 3 bronze medals from the Asian Games.
- Gerasim Kochnev is a multiple winner of continental championships and Asian Games. Participant of the Olympic Games in Rio 2016.
The Samarkand Rowing Canal was not chosen as the venue for a reason – this historic venue is perfect for this level of competition. This canal is one of the few man-made structures of its kind in the world. In particular, it is the only artificial sports facility of its kind in Central Asia.

Kayaking and canoeing is a very fun and dynamic sport that attracts many fans from all over the world. Intense competitions between men and women promise bright and exciting moments.
