On Friday, August 9, Russian native Darya Varfolomeeva, competing for the German national team, won the gold medal in the all-around rhythmic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics. In four exercises, the 17-year-old athlete from Schmid scored a total of 142,850 points and won Germany’s first Olympic gold in the sport.
Second place went to Boryana Kaleyn from Bulgaria (140,600), third place went to Sofia Raffaeli from Italy (136,300).
Athlete born in Barnaul
Varfolomeyeva was born in Barnaul. In Russia, the gymnast participated in various junior competitions, her highest achievement was the sixth place in the Championship of the Siberian Federal Circuit. In 2019, he moved to Germany with his parents and changed his sports citizenship.
Varfolomeeva has six gold, four silver and one bronze medals at the World Championships (2022, 2023), two gold and three bronze medals at the European Championships (2022, 2023, 2024). The German national team is coached by Yulia Raskina of Belarus, a silver medalist from the 2000 Olympics.
At the previous Olympics in Tokyo, Russian gymnasts failed to win Olympic gold in the individual all-around for the first time in 25 years – when Israel’s Linoy Ashram edged out Dina Averin. In Paris, Russian gymnasts refused to come out as neutral after the Russian national team was expelled from the Olympics because of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
