18:00, today
To make studying a joy and not a burden.
Today is the first day of the new school year in Tajikistan – a serious test for hundreds of Tajik first-graders and their parents. About what parents of first-graders need to know to make studying a joy and not a burden for them, Asia-Plus said elementary school teacher with many years of experience Nissa Jurakulova.
How can parents help their children adapt to new conditions?
Adapting any child to school after kindergarten is very stressful, even if your child is eager to learn. Starting school radically changes the life of a seven-year-old child. A new environment, new people, a new way of life – all this puts him in unfamiliar conditions, so the future first-grader needs the help of his parents.
First, together with the baby, they have to build a new daily routine, which needs to be followed from the beginning of August so that the baby gets used to it. So that he does not fight back, you need to involve him in the work. For example, buy Whatman paper, bright markers and draw a daily schedule together. The child has to get used to getting up at 6 in the morning, eating breakfast, getting ready for school, so that he can be on the line at 7.30. And at 21:00 the lights will be switched on to restore the power.
The school, in turn, helps the child to adapt. Currently, many schools in the country have introduced the practice of first-graders going to school for lessons in an informal environment for two weeks in August. The children get to know the teacher and classmates in a playful way, the rules of the school are explained to them, and a tour is prepared. If earlier there were cases when children cried in confusion on the first days of school, now there are no such cases.
How much time should freshmen spend on homework?
15:00 August 17th
The average time for homework is 45 minutes, maximum one hour.
This time is quite sufficient to consolidate the material discussed at school. If you force your child to study more, he will quickly become bored.
After he finishes his homework, you need to play with him and encourage him. If parents force a first-grader to only study, there is a high risk that he will lose all interest in learning.
Should naps be introduced for first graders?
Sure. Nevertheless, first-graders are still children who are not used to a great mental load.
Children are tired at school, so it is better to let them rest and sleep for at least an hour after returning home from school and having lunch. Sleep is an ideal helper in this matter.
How much time can a first-grader spend in front of the TV and the computer?
In order to avoid problems with vision, nervous system and other health problems, the continuous use of devices, computer or television should not exceed twenty minutes for a freshman.
During classes, we also use interactive whiteboards and projectors for educational purposes, but their use does not exceed acceptable standards.
How much should a first grader’s backpack weigh?
13:10 August 29
The weight of the backpack, together with textbooks and other school supplies, should not exceed one and a half kilograms. Otherwise, the school backpack will turn into an unbearable burden for the child’s spine. Parents must strictly monitor this.
In my practice, there have been cases where parents put all the textbooks and notebooks in the baby’s backpack – just in case two notebooks and two textbooks were enough.
Should I give my child school meals?
It is not appropriate to bring snacks to school – they are children, they may forget to wash their hands before eating. In the morning, the child should have a hearty and balanced breakfast, because he experiences mental stress at school.
First-graders usually only have a few lessons a day, classes end at 11.00, so they can eat lunch at home after school.
But there are children who have no appetite in the morning, no matter how hard their parents try. In this case, you can give the child a box with a snack – banana, apple, yogurt to drink. Otherwise, there is a risk that the child will faint and his productivity will decrease due to hunger.
